Name: Dorothy Catalonia
Canon: Gundam Wing
Canon Point: After Endless Waltz
Age:
Background: here
Personality: When one first meets Dorothy, one of the most striking and alarming things about her is her claim to love war. Indeed, she does seem to be enthusiastic about it and waxes poetic on the subject. When one digs deeper, however, she loathes war, and is emotionally scarred from losing loved ones. She’s very acutely aware of the consequences of war, and would go to extremes to put a stop to it. Even if that means making people so afraid of war that they would never want to have one happen ever again. Her enthusiasm isn’t for war, but rather that she feels that humans are at their most admirable and noble when they are willing to stand up for what they believe in. She has no tolerance for cowards who sit by and passively accept circumstances that they don’t truly want, as shown when she mocks people watching Mariemeia Khushrenada’s attempts to take over, suggesting that they go wag their tails for her, and when they’re offended by that, she adds “My mistake, you’re not the dogs wagging their tails, you’re the tails that get wagged”. However, the moment they decide they’re going to go and protest, she has transportation ready to help them on their way. Dorothy views conflict as an inherent part of human nature, and doesn’t think it’s something people need to avoid, so much as they need to channel it appropriately. She believes the true enemy that has to be defeated is in one’s heart, and only through changing people’s feelings can humanity be saved.
Dorothy is an instigator. Although she will use polite enough words and tone of voice, she’s adept at pushing people’s buttons and stirring things up. Even when invited to be more casual with Relena, she’s intentionally overly formal. While attending school in the newly restored Sanc Kingdom, she comments that if everyone was like Relena, everyone would immediately dismiss war as foolish and there would always be peace. It’s a subtle barb at the absolute pacifism preached by the Sanc Kingdom. Her way of letting Heero know that she’s aware of who he really is, is challenging him to a fencing match and telling a story of two people named Heero Yuy as they fight, pushing him until he’s forced to show some of his real strength in the duel against her. When she duels against Quatre aboard the Libra battleship, she taunts him about all of his fighting for the sake of the colonies being pointless, as the space colonies wound up turning on the Gundam pilots and then declaring war on the Earth. Although she does provoke people, Dorothy always has a purpose behind it. She does this to challenge people’s convictions and make them assert themselves.
Dorothy has nerves of steel. She rarely loses her composure. At the conclusion of her aforementioned duel with Heero, he stabs his rapier right through the glass shield over her face and she doesn’t even flinch. One of the only times she loses her composure is immediately after seeing the space shuttle her grandfather is on being blown up. Even then, she recovers quickly, giving herself a minute to express her grief, and never letting any of the people present see her cry. Another time is when she believes Zechs is going to kill Treize with the battleship Libra’s powerful cannon instead of having a mobile suit duel, and there she actually tries to tackle him to stop him from pushing the button, but she quickly regains her composure after the cannon doesn’t hit Treize. As further proof of her mental and emotional fortitude, Dorothy is the only person to not experience temporary insanity from using the ZERO system. She is very good at compartmentalizing and suppressing her emotions, and combined with her intelligence, she projects an iron will. The downside of this is that she sees showing her kinder and emotional side as a weakness, so she’s repressed to an unhealthy degree. It’s how she’s ultimately defeated in her confrontation with Quatre - although she injured him much more severely than he injured her, she’s emotionally defeated both by him telling her she’s kind and calling out her true feelings toward war, as well as the news of her step-cousin Treize’s death.
Subtle and duplicitous, Dorothy proves to be an adept manipulator. She knows how to pretend to be on someone’s side while discreetly advancing her own agenda. Although her grandfather, Duke Dermail Catalonia, is head of the Romefeller Foundation, and Dorothy does care for him, she also actively works against him while pretending to spy on Relena for him. She makes an anonymous call to foil an assassination attempt on Relena. Later when Duke Dermail expresses consternation at members of the Romefeller Foundation being swayed by Relena advocating peace, Dorothy immediately shuts down his idea of having Relena dealt with by pointing out that he’d be the most obvious suspect if anything were to happen to her, and he currently doesn’t have the influence to sweep an investigation under the rug. Instead, she encourages him to go and deal with rumours of an uprising in space, therefore removing him as an obstacle to the efforts to lay down arms and have true peace. Dorothy later manages to join the extremist space colony organization White Fang and be made second in command after giving a rousing speech. While not all of her plans work out, Dorothy has a talent for persuasion.
Powers: Dorothy doesn’t possess any powers, but she is highly intelligent and strong willed, an effective spy and strategist, a capable fencer, and one of the only people in her universe capable of handling the ZERO system without her brain being overloaded by all the data - she even manages control over the mobile dolls while in a fencing duel and making conversation. She’s a good enough markswoman to shoot a gun out of someone’s hand. She also possesses some hacking skills, though she’s not an expert. She was able to access confidential files at the Sanc Kingdom’s school.
